What does YNWP do?

Your Nickel's Worth Publishing takes your book from draft manuscript through to final print run using print industry standard design software. Authors and illustrators see and approve the manuscript every step of the way before the book goes to press.

YNWP assists with marketing and promotion of its titles. YNWP is a vendor for all major Canadian bookstores and library wholesalers.

YNWP provides distribution services for its titles at a cost of 20% of the book’s retail price. For those who want to do their own distribution, YNWP can also assist with book production only (the author would need to provide YNWP with the ISBN and Cataloguing in Publication data for their book. YNWP can help source both).

YNWP presents its authors with opportunities to market and advertise their books, as well as to submit them for consideration for reviews and awards where eligible.

YNWP manages the ongoing requirements for metadata and submits industry standard ONIX files to multiple databases to ensure accuracy and consistency of information about the books it publishes.

How much will it cost?

Each book is a custom project and the cost of book production and editing will vary, depending on the quality of the writing, the complexity of the desired layout, and the time needed to make any images ready for press. Please contact us for a production quote specific to your needs. Each YNWP title is subject to the editing process.

Note that print costs are separate, and YNWP will forward all print quotes to the author for approval. The more books printed, the lower the per book cost, but the higher the number of books to sell. Keep in mind that bookstores retain 40%-50% of the book’s retail price.

Does YNWP publish any book?

YNWP reserves the right to determine the books it chooses to publish and uses its own ISBNs.

Do I have to sign a contract?

If YNWP chooses to publish your title, a contract will be sent to you for your review and signature. YNWP also has a contract for those who want book production only (no marketing or distribution). In either case, a $500 deposit is required before work on your book begins.

Who owns the copyright?

The creators of a book’s content—the author, artists, and photographers who supply the content—retain copyright for their work. YNWP provides the author with all files when the project is complete.

Do I need permission to reprint text, song lyrics and images?

If you are quoting song lyrics or entire poems, you must have the permission of the copyright holder to reprint them. In general, if you are quoting more than 10% of a written work, you must have permission from the copyright holder to quote it. You must have permission to reproduce images that are not your own. There are sometimes fees associated with receiving permissions.

Can I use pictures off the internet?

If you have the permission of the copyright holder of the image, and if the image is of high enough resolution to print, then yes. However, images sourced from the internet often have too little resolution to use for print, and online availability doesn’t mean they’re free to use. Purchased stock photos from sites like www.istockphoto.com are a great solution.

Can YNWP help me find an illustrator?

YNWP works with a variety of talented, professional illustrators and can assist with finding an artist to make your vision a reality. If you already know an artist you want to work with, YNWP requests a sample of their work before the publishing contract is signed.

What resolution is needed to properly print images?

Images must be a minimum of 300 dpi (dots per inch) at the size you want them to appear in the book in order to print properly. YNWP can scan your original images or artwork for use in your book.

How much should I charge for my book?

Once a print quote has been received, YNWP can help figure out a reasonable retail price to set. Most of YNWP’s titles fall in the range between $12.95-$19.95.

Does YNWP provide distribution?

YNWP provides distribution services at a cost of 20% of the book's retail price. As part of its distribution services, YNWP also manages the ongoing requirements for ensuring the book’s metadata is consistent and accurate, and provides industry standard ONIX records to various databases.

Does YNWP submit books for book reviews and awards?

YNWP provides the opportunity to submit titles for consideration for reviews and awards where eligible. Among other places, YNWP books are consistently reviewed at: http://reviews.skbooks.com/?cat=96

How long does it take to publish a book from start to finish?

It depends on the length and complexity of the book. In most cases, YNWP’s books are ready within a three-month time span. Most print companies have a four- or five-week turnaround from the time they receive the print files to the time printed copies are delivered.
